Courses

Minimum Placement Requirements

Some courses have minimum placement requirements in English, Reading, and/or Math.  These are skills you need to be successful in the course. You can show placement in several ways, such as:

  • high school GPA or successful completion of high school transitional math or english courses
  • standardized test scores (ACT/SAT)
  • Parkland assessment test scores
  • taking skill development courses in ENG, CCS, or MAT

If you are not sure what your placement level is, contact the Assessment Center for help. See the placement website for more information.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites are other courses you must complete before registering for a class.  Some prerequisites must be taken at the same time as a class (“concurrent enrollment”). If you believe your circumstances should allow an exception to the prerequisites, contact the department chair  in charge of the course.

General Education Courses

Only certain courses can be used to fulfill general education requirements.  See the list of general education courses below for the type of degree you are seeking.

Mathematics Placement

Parkland College uses a multiple measures approach to math placement. Students are required to have valid placement through a prerequisite course or other placement measures prior to registering in any mathematics course. Measures for placement include:

  1. high school GPA and successful completion of a 4th year of math;
  2. high school transitional math courses;
  3. scores from GED, SAT, ACT, PARRC, AP, and ALEKS; and
  4. previous coursework earning a C or higher

Placement using high school GPA, standardized tests, transitional math courses, and developmental math courses is valid for two years. Placement from successfully completed college-level courses is valid for five years.
